How Acoustic Gunshot Detection Actually Works

A gunshot detection network is a grid of acoustic sensors mounted across an area
— on buildings, poles and existing infrastructure. Each sensor listens for the
specific acoustic signature of a firearm discharge: a sharp impulse with a very fast
rise time, quite unlike a car backfire, fireworks or a slammed door.

When several sensors detect the same impulse, the system compares the microsecond
differences in arrival time between them. Because sound travels at a known speed, those
tiny differences resolve to a location, often within a few metres. The alert, the
coordinates and the number of rounds fired reach a dispatcher in seconds.

The part that matters operationally is what that replaces. A traditional response
depends on somebody hearing gunfire, deciding it was gunfire, choosing to call, and then
describing where they think it came from. Detection systems remove every one of those
steps.

Why Most Gunfire Is Never Reported

The uncomfortable finding behind these programmes is how much shooting goes
unreported. In areas where gunfire is not unusual, residents frequently do not call at
all — because they are unsure what they heard, because they assume someone else
has called, or because they do not wish to be involved.

That has a direct consequence. Rounds fired into buildings and vehicles are found days
later. Evidence sits in the street uncollected. Victims are located late. A detection
system produces a record of an incident that would otherwise have generated nothing at
all.

What Detection Does Not Do

It is worth being straight about the limits, because the technology is often sold as
though it were a complete answer.

  • It does not prevent the first shot. Detection is a response
    technology. Deterrence comes from presence — from lighting, patrols and visible
    security.
  • It does not identify anyone. The system reports where a shot came
    from, not who fired it.
  • It is not a substitute for people. An alert with nobody to act on it
    is a log entry. The value is entirely in the response it triggers.
  • Coverage is bounded. Sensors cover the area they were installed to
    cover, and gaps at the edges are real.

What This Means for Private Property

Most gunshot detection deployments are city-wide programmes run by municipalities.
Individual communities, venues and campuses are usually not going to install their own
acoustic network — but they are frequently inside the coverage area of one, and
that raises a question worth answering in advance: what happens on your property in
the sixty seconds after an alert?

That question has nothing to do with the technology and everything to do with
planning. Who moves toward the incident and who moves people away from it. Which
entrances close and who closes them. Who meets responding officers and directs them.
Whether anyone on site can render aid before an ambulance arrives. Whether the people
working there have ever practised any of it.

For most properties, that plan does not exist, and the alert simply produces
confusion faster than a phone call would have.

Can a gated community install gunshot detection?
Commercially available systems exist, but they are generally priced and engineered for
municipal-scale deployment. For most communities the better spend is presence and
planning rather than sensors.

Does gunshot detection replace calling 911?
No. It supplements it. Anyone who witnesses an incident should still call.

How accurate are these systems?
Accuracy varies by deployment, sensor density and environment. Dense urban grids
generally localise well; coverage edges and sound-reflective environments are harder.

What should our property do to prepare?
Write down what happens in the first minute — who moves, who closes what, who meets
